Bukchon Hanok Village: The Joseon Era in Seoul

Bukchon Hanok Village is one of the most visited traditional villages in Seoul that still keep the Joseon era of Korea.  This place is actually a residential area. It means they are just like normal houses with normal people living in there.

Bukchon Hanok Village is a Korean traditional village in Seoul surrounded by Gyeongbuk Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Jongmyo Royal Palace.  Hanok is a term to describe the Korean traditional houses and Bukchon literally means “northern village”. 

If you will visit this place please be quiet because of the increasing amount of visitors in this place, there are many complaints from the residents living in the area. You will see banners saying “
조용히 해 주세요” means “Please be Quiet.”

These days the some of the hanoks serve as guest houses, museums, cafe, and cultural centers. This is actually nice because a lot of tourists come every day and joining some cultural events and workshops is fun and you can also learn a lot of things while traveling. 

Major Attractions

1. Bukchon Traditional Cultural Center

Bukchon Traditional Cultural Center where you can able to experience and join the programs like calligraphy, tea ceremony, pansori (traditional music storytelling), and there’s a lot more like traditional craft classes too.

2. Bukchon Hanok Hall

Bukchon Hanok Hall where you can see the works of Han Sang Soo, the master of embroidery. In this hall, they keep the preserve and develop the traditional embroidery.

3. Baek Inje’s House

There’s also the Baek Inje’s House, this house maintains the traditional and modern style of hanok where it represents Bukchon because of its historical value.

How to get here:

Take the subway line 3, Anguk Station and get out from Exit 2. Walk straight for about 300m and hen you reach Bukchon-ro 8-gil cross the road to your left.
