Cheonjiyeon Falls (천지연폭포): Where Heaven and Earth Meet

Last June 11 to 14, 2019, our family went for a tour in Jeju, it was my first time to be there and I really love the place. Away from the city like Seoul, Jeju is more on nature, beaches, mountains, forests, eco lands, parks and etc.

On our second day, we went to Cheonjiyeon Falls and when I saw it reminds of the Pagsanjan Falls of the Philippines. A lot of tourists visit here with their family, friends, students too to take a photo and enjoy the view of the falls.

water falls

Cheonjiyeon is a pond where heaven and earth meet, it is designated as a natural monument through the whole valley as it is a natural habitat for Elaeocarpus and temperate zone plants. Approximately one kilometer above the falls, there is a Sombancheon River, which is the source of the Cheonjiyeon Falls’ clear water, and on the other side of the falls is a place called Cheonyeonsahu where soldiers practiced archery. The river here is protected as a natural habitat for giant mottled eels.

Mulheobeok

Mulheobeok

Mulheobeok is a water jar that is used in Jeju Island, primarily to carry water. It has a narrow and convex mouth with a flat foot to prevent the overflow of water when one is carrying the jar on the back. It is usually paired with Mulgudeok, a basket made of bamboo or bush clover, to carry the jar. Mulgudeok has support made of split bamboo pieces at the bottom portion.

A Place for Prayer

A place for prayer, there are many pieces of basalt rock in Jeju Island. Traditionally small basalt rocks have been used as materials in making rock fence or walls that protect the house or garden from the strong wind blowing from the coastal sea and the trespasser in the island. People long ago have wished for them and their family’s good health and well being making a pile of stones or a basalt rock fence around the big stone or the old tree that are holding some typical legends. The place of Cheonjiyeon has been bearing the typical legend that your wishes will come true if you pray and put small stones or small basalt rocks on the pile of stones in this place.

Taking pictures is not the only you can do here but also learn the important things about the habitat of Cheonjiyeon Falls. The Seogwipo Hydroelectric Power Plant site was located here too at Cheonjiyeon falls for over 29 years (1943 to 1972).
