A Moment to Remember: An Unforgettable Movie

sIn adA Moment to Remember, my very unforgettable favorite movie. A Korean love story about a young couple’s lasting love that has been put into a test.

If there’s one movie that I will never ever forget is “A Moment to Remember”. An iconic Korean movie starred by Jung Woo Sung as Chul soo and Son Ye Jin as Su Jin, who played as Yoon Seri in the drama Crash Landing on You. The movie was released in November 2004 and directed by John H Lee. It was based on the Japanese television drama Pure Seoul.

When a memory is gone, so is the soul, they say. …

A Moment to Remember (내 머리 속의 지우개: Nae Meorisogui Jiugae) is a love story of a young couple’s long-lasting love that has been put into a test when Chul soo’s wife, Su-jin was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

The first parts of the story were about how they met and ended up with each other as a couple. Su-jin was waiting at the railway station to run away with his boyfriend (who’s been a married man) but he didn’t show up. She went to a convenient store and bought a can of cola but she suddenly left the store and she forgot to bring the cola.

Upon walking she was looking for the cola and remembered she left it on the store and runs back. Then he saw Chul soo holding a cola on the front of the store and she thought it was the one she bought so she grabbed and drank it and returned the empty can to him. Later she realizes that it was the guy’s drink and not hers when she returned to the store to get her forgotten wallet.

Without a coincidence, they met again when she went with her father at the construction site where Chul soo was working. He was a carpenter but later became a licensed architect. In a short period of time, they started dating and get married.

Filled with happiness, the couple started knowing each other as they live in one roof after their marriage. But suddenly their dreams fall apart when Su jin was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She tried to keep it to his husband and family but later on, they found out.

He tried his best to take good care of her wife but one-day Su-jin’s ex-boyfriend came to visit and return her things. She was happy to see him, and it seems like nothing happened. But Chul soo arrived and they got into a fight and the whole family saw what happened. Her father wants to take care of her but Chul soo insisted that he can take care of her wife.

One day Su-jin calls Chul-soo by his ex-boyfriend’s name and told him she loves him. Hurt and confused he went and talked to Su-jin’s doctor. Upon hearing the doctor’s word he got the answers to his questions. In the meanwhile, Su-jin realizes what she had done in the morning to his husband, she run-away and left but nothing except a note. Telling him that he doesn’t need to find her.

But Chul-soo managed to find her when she sent him a letter telling him she suddenly remembers everything. The end of the movie is where they first met, at the convenience store. But this time, Su-jin’s family and their friends were all there. At the point, she remembers from the start where they met and then he took her and went together into a long journey and finally he tells her that he loves her.

Why it’s my favorite movie?

The movies’ story is very simple but very meaningful. I like how they created Chul-soo’s character, a scruffy looking guy but full of hotness while Su-jin plays like an innocent girl, cheerful and cute.  In addition, the soundtrack of the movie including La Paloma, El Reloj, and Nessun Dorma was perfectly played and blended in the movie. I felt like I was watching a foreign movie and yet it was a Korean movie.

It became my favorite movie because it touches my heart. It made me cry but made me believe that true love can conquer all. This movie made me believe that even the mind can forget everything, the heart does not forget.

In addition to that, I learned some things from the movie. Lessons in life that we shouldn’t forget and we should consider. We don’t know, we might suffer like Su-jin. This movie made me realize how devastating Alzheimer’s disease must be.

Things I learned from the movie

Learn to forgive

Despite what other people have done to us we should always learn to forgive. Forgiving is the most beautiful form of love. If we will learn to forgive will able to live in peace and happiness.

Tell someone you love them before it’s too late

We all know that we only live once and we don’t know when we will leave this world. So before it’s too late, tell our love ones that we love and care for them. Express our deepest love to them. Show them how important they are. Let us appreciate the small things that they do for us. So whenever that time comes, we will never have any regrets.

If you haven’t seen the movie and want to watch it, it’s available on Netflix.

P.S. Listening to the movie’s soundtrack La Paloma while writing this. Try listening and share what you feel.
